Funding Opportunity
The impact of cardiovascular disease on the general population cannot be overstated. It is the top killer of adults in Indiana and the U.S. Stroke, which has cardiovascular origins, is close behind, ranking fourth as a killer of Hoosiers and third as a cause of death nationwide. Death rates due to both heart attack and stroke in Indiana have consistently outpaced US rates over the last ten years.1
The prevalence of hypertension in Indiana has increased by 20 percent in the last five years. Nearly one third of Hoosiers (31 percent) have been told they have hypertension, or high blood pressure. Nearly 12 percent of Hoosiers who suffered heart attacks also had hypertension, and nearly 6 percent of stroke patients were hypertensive.2 As explained in the background section of this application, a chief factor in the development of hypertension is excessive consumption of sodium.
The Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH), through the Division of Chronic Disease Prevention and Control’s Cardiovascular Health Program, in conjunction with the Preventive Health and Health Services Block Grant by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is pleased to announce the availability of funding to facilitate the development, implementation, and evaluation of community-level sodium reduction initiatives.

The Indiana Comprehensive Cancer Control Program received notification of award this morning – Indiana was funded for Policy Initiatives for Cancer Prevention and Control. Thank you all for your contributions to this proposal. I look forward to working very closely with the Indiana Cancer Consortium as we implement the proposed policy agenda over the next five years:
· Pass a comprehensive smokefree air law
· Increase cigarette tax
· Increase the number of Complete Streets policies
· Require school corporations to provide at least 30 minutes a day of physical activity in elementary schools
The impact these policy initiatives can make in reducing the burden of cancer and other chronic diseases is very exciting! We have a lot of work to do, but a healthier Indiana is worth the effort.
Thank you for your continued support!
Sincerely,
Keylee M. Wright, M.A.
